How this issue affects you
Internet speed (uploading, downloading, and viewing content) is slower when Malwarebytes VPN is turned on.
What caused this issue
Malwarebytes VPN helps protect your privacy by acting as a shield between you and the websites you visit. Because your internet traffic has to travel through the VPN and be encrypted for safety, it can sometimes cause your internet speed to slow down.
How to resolve this issue
If your download and upload speeds are slower than you'd expect, try turning the VPN off to see if the speed improves. If the VPN is off and your internet speed is still slow, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for assistance.
To resolve a slower internet speed with VPN turned on, try the following:
- Server location: Selecting a VPN server location closer to your physical location can improve your connection speed. To switch your server location, see Change VPN server location in Desktop Security or Change VPN server location in Mobile Security.
- Tunnel driver options: On Windows devices, check that you are connected using the WireGuardNT tunnel driver instead of Malwarebytes MBtun. This option is only available if no bypass VPN rules are present. Contact support if you need assistance.
- Router settings: Malwarebytes VPN uses UDP and TCP protocols to establish a connection with the internet. Check your router settings to determine if your router allows connection to the internet using these protocols. If not, refer to your router manufacturer's configuration manual and update your settings to allow connections using these protocols.
- Third-party services: Some third-party services may impact your VPN performance. To prevent this, add the path to the VPN product folder to your third-party apps or to your firewall's allow list. Refer to the third-party app or firewall configuration manual for instructions.
If you are still having issues with slow internet when VPN is turned on, contact Support.
