Internet speed is slower when Web Protection is turned on

  • Compatible with:
  • Windows
  • Available in:
  • Malwarebytes Device Protection & Antivirus

How this issue affects you

Internet speed (uploading, downloading, and viewing content) is slower on your Windows device when Web Protection is turned on.

What caused this issue

Malwarebytes' Web Protection feature blocks you from connecting to scam, malware, and phishing sites. This protection feature may add a small delay when connecting to sites and might reduce connection speed for some users.

Web Protection on Windows uses the Windows Filtering Platform to filter your web traffic. If another antivirus on your computer also filters web traffic, both products check the same connections which can cause slowdowns or connection issues.

How to resolve this issue

To resolve a slower internet speed with Web Protection turned on, try the following:

  1. Update your Malwarebytes app to the latest version. Follow the steps in Update to the latest Malwarebytes version on Windows for more guidance.
  2. Restart your device and run a speed test with Web Protection on.
  3. Run a speed test with Web Protection off to see if Web Protection is causing slow speeds. Remember to turn Web Protection back on so you can stay safe from harmful websites as you browse.
  4. Try the following troubleshooting options:
  5. If those fixes do not work, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for assistance.
  6. If you are still having issues with slow internet when Web Protection is turned on, contact Support.
